Acrylic and Watercolor paintings

Artist's Statement

_

Thanks for visiting my website.

If you've already looked at my work, you know that I like to get up close to the things I paint. I begin by photographing them with a small digital camera, then paint from the photographs, striving to capture the vitality and light of the original scene. I want to foster in the viewer a sense of intimacy with the subject.

You may also have noticed that I love warm, bright colors. I spent much of my work life confined to the world of words, so it was with great exhilaration that I discovered painting. I like to think that exhilaration is reflected in my work. For me, there is a directness in painting that I rarely experience when I'm working with words.

Why watercolor? It's where I started and where I feel most comfortable, so far at least. People with more experience say that watercolor is a difficult medium. Maybe so, but watercolor adds an element of randomness or chaos to an otherwise realistic painting that doesn't seem possible with acrylics or oils.  (Having written this in 2009, I must now admit that I'm also experimenting with acrylics and will be showing my work in that medium for the first time at the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts beginning in late October, 2010.)

As for process, I do much of my painting very early in the morning. I have always been an extreme morning person, waking up at what most people would call the middle of the night. Before I began to paint, this was a nuisance. Now early morning is the most satisfying part of the day, a time when I can focus entirely on painting, unhindered by stray thoughts or nagging obligations. Some call it discipline. I call it joy.

I 'd love to hear from you.  Click on "contact" if you'd like to drop me an email.
